Remove “on behalf of” when sending message as another exchange 2003 outlook user

In order to get rid of the “on behalf of” in send message and have it so it just appears as being from the delegating user, add the sending user has to have “send as” security permissions in the delegating users active directory profile.

1. Start Active Directory Users and Computers; click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.

2. On the View menu, make sure that Advanced Features is selected.

3. Double-click the user that you want to grant send as rights for, and then click the Security tab.

4. Click Add, click the user that you want to give send as rights to, and then check send as under allow in the Permissions area.

4.5  Remove all other permissions granted by default so only the send as permission is granted.

5. Click OK to close the dialog box.

There is a  problem in that Exchange can take a while for the changes to take effect (up to two hours apparantly).  The quick method is to restart the Information Store.

If you want a person to be able to send as any user in the organisation, in exchange system manager go to \SERVER\first storage group. Right click on the mailbox store and go to properties. In the Security tab add the user. By default this will give the user extensive permissions to all the mailboxes.Also see

  1. Is it possible to give a non-exchange account “Send as” privileges? A gmail account, for example?

  2. If you are using Gmail to send your mail through a Web browser, in the settings tab you can add an additional send as account. When you add the account gmail will send a confirmation e-mail to that address with a code that needs to be entered in order to authorise you to use that send from address.

    If you you are using Microsoft Outlook with a gmail/pop account, you can simply add an additional pop account with a different send as address. This is the way e-mail spoofing works. However if you are sending from your outlook using a domain that has an anti-spoofing records set up, your e-mail will be bounced by some servers that use this method to check for spoofed email.

  3. I have my gmail setup to be able to send emails from my exchange account as you described above, and it works beautifully…when sending to a non-exchange email account. When sending to another exchange account (for example, anyone else in my company), it’ll come up as xxxxxx@gmail.com on behalf of xxxx@mycompany.com, which tends to confuse people.

    I was thinking that adding my gmail account as a “send as” user would get around this, but I’m not sure if you can give that kind of permission to a non-exchange user. What do you think?
